In this post i will solve OSINT exercise 001 by Sofia Santos, I recommend you all check her exercises and websites as she is the one who inspired me to start writing this blog.
The exercise consists of finding the exact coordinates of a picture on a Twitter post.
My solution: First i googled Kiffa on google maps, i got a city in Mauritania, the environment, architecture and soil colour seem to match the ones on the picture, so its safe to say we got the correct city.
I changed to google earth pro and set the calendar to 2013, the year of the picture.
We know the picture was taken in the mourning according to the description. In the picture we can see that the buildings and people (marked in red) make shadows pointing to the right side of the image (marked in blue), the sun rises in the East so the shadows are pointing West, which indicates that the road is pointing South.
Considering that the road is tarmacked and wide its then safe to assume that its one of the main roads. It also leads to some greenery, having the environment in account most likely indicates a source of water, like a river or a lake.
With all that information the only one that fits the criteria its the main road leaving the city in a southern direction.
Now that we have the road, what remais is finding the exact spot on it. The place the picture was taken from has some identifying marks, its got a building on each side (marked in pink and blue), a tree peaking from behind the building on the right (marked in yellow), not a lot of other building after the two more prevalent which indicates its at the edge of the city and its pointing towards the river (marked in green).
The individual taking the picture was next to the building in pink on the side of the road, on the approximate coordinates of 16°36'34.31"N 11°23'52.13"W.
